Green Art Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in the Third Edition of the Bastakiya Art Fair, previously the Creek Art Fair, taking place from the 15th until the 22nd of March 2009. Green Art Gallery will be presenting a new body of work by Syrian installation artist Buthayna Ali, entitled "I'm Ashamed". This will be Buthayna's first appearance in the Gulf, having previously exhibited at both the Istanbul and Cairo Biennales in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

The new site-specific installation, whose idea was conceived as a response to the recent war on Gaza, deals with the accumulation of war memories and the emotional and psychological destruction they leave behind.

Buthayna Ali draws images, signs and objects from their proveniences and territories to explore them in other directions than those imposed by cultural conventions. Her process of abstraction aims at the inner strength of a visual rather than pure form or geometry. She subjects images, signs and objects which are part of common and daily life to their semantic implications. Through small modifications and shifts she induces individuality and at the same time multiplies them in series. Via positions and pattern she engenders references, via space and light relations.

In all her art works, she focuses on the contradiction of her milieu; one can strongly sense her desire of getting closer to the society, its states, its concerns and its inconsistencies.

About Green Art Gallery

Green Art Gallery was founded in 1995 and was amongst the first galleries to exhibit Arab art in Dubai. The Gallery became a primary establishment to nurture the city's earliest art collector base by promoting pioneering artists from across the Middle East and North Africa. Leveraging its long and rich history in the market, Green Art Gallery will also begin to represent and showcase contemporary artists from the region. In this manner the Gallery would become one of the few spaces whose knowledge and expertise has spanned the Arab art movement from modernism and will continue to promote the newest tendencies in the regional contemporary art practices.

Green Art Gallery aims to become not only an exhibition space, but also as a supporter and point of reference for the regional trends in modern and contemporary art practices.
