World Game Championship (WGC) 2009 has officially opened the gaming season for the year as announced in the recently held press conference.
Eng. Anas Al Madani, Vice President of Index Holding, the organizers of the biggest games competition said "It is a privilege for us to organize the next sequel of this exciting event, where we expect young athletes show their gaming styles, intensive strategic wit and evident teamwork in one place as they battle with the best players in the region. Gaming has never been so upbeat and this exhilarating."
In 2008, the WGC 2009 was initially called the Dubai World Game Championship, originally as one of the activities of the Dubai World Game Expo, has staged a 4-console gaming competition with Pro Evolution Soccer on Play Station 3, Top Spin Tennis on Nintendo Wii, Counter Strike on PC, Need for Speed on Microsoft Xbox. It has attracted thousands of gamers from the country and the gulf as the organizers brought the eight-weekend competition to the malls of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. The winning team of Counter Strike had the opportunity to represent UAE to the World Cyber Games in Cologne, Germany.
This year, the games are bigger and better. The World Game Championship 2009, themed under The Dubai Challenge, is presenting a whole new line of games from Digital including PC, console and on-line, Sports like Soccer and Basketball, plus Arcade such as American High Striker, Deal or No Deal and Sega Rally. Gamers young and old should expect an exciting year of competition to be held on Magic Planet Mall of Emirates, City Centre - Deira, Ajman, Sharjah, Muscat and Bahrain.
More than AED 100,000 worth of prizes is up for grabs and a chance for UAE nationals to represent the country in the upcoming World Cyber Games in Chengdu, China.
WGC 2009 is part of the Dubai World Game Expo under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, in conjunction with the Character Dubai and supported by MTV Arabia, Dubai Shopping Festival and Dubai Summer Surprises, and Department of Naturalization and Residency - Dubai.
