Artists and designers from the UAE, Germany and Europe are all set to participate in a unique collaborative discussion titled "Dubai Dusseldorf No. 1" that seeks to build cultural bridges between the two dynamic metropolises. The new initiative brings together eight renowned artists from each region to work on exciting joint concept in art, architecture and fashion.
The discussion is being organized under the patronage of the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority by the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region and Al Bastakiya Art Fair in cooperation with the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen Dusseldorf.
Concepts included in the discussion range from a European-Emirati Abaya collection to suggested designs for World Trade Centres in Dubai and Dusseldorf and to the transformation of the Sheikh Zayed Road into a pedestrian zone like the famous shopping mile of Dusseldorf, the "Kö".
The panel discsussion will take place on the 18th of March, where the artists will present "Dubai Dusseldorf No. 1" in Al Bastakiya. Speakers include German author Ingo Niermann, London-based architect Ralf Pflugfelder, space-theorist Markus Miessen and Swiss-American graphic designer Zak Kyes.
The event is the third in the series of panel discussions organised by the Bastakiya Art School titled "Friendship of the Peoples: Contemporary Collaboration". The discussion is moderated by Shumon Basar from London.
After their stay in Dubai, the group of artists will travel to Dusseldorf for further research. The final results of "Dubai Dusseldorf No. 1" will be presented at an exhibition in Dusseldorf this summer, and at the Third Line Gallery in Dubai in November/December 2009.

About Al Bastakiya Art Fair
Now in its third year, Al Bastakiya Art Fair (BAF) takes place in the houses of Bastakiya - the historic area of Dubai - from 15 to 22 March 2009. Organized by XVA Gallery, BAF 2009 is an independent fringe art fair which focuses international attention on Dubai's art and cultural agenda.
BAF 2009 opens up the unique environment of Bastakiya to contemporary art and runs parallel to Art Dubai and Sharjah Biennial 09. In the best tradition of all things fringe, the fair provides a public space for emerging artistic talent and draws on the capabilities of the local artistic community: artists from the region and those who live here."
